If there’s one thing Netflix is particularly great at, it’s creating focus around pressing societal issues. The situation with the Menendez brothers’ abuse is no different.
While the story is tragic, there could be a glimpse of hope on the horizon. After having been found guilty of killing their parents in 1989, they were put in jail, despite crushing circumstances.
However, new evidence that has come to light in the Menendez case is opening up the doors for a potential new trial, and as a consequence, their release date could be as early as January 2025. We’ve spoken with sources familiar with the situation, and many now believe that a release could be on the horizon.
Erik previously wrote to his cousin, but the evidence was not allowed in trial, and it could have had devastating effects on the course of history.
Two new pieces of evidence were being submitted that couldn’t be accessed before, which could play a crucial role in the habeas corpus the brothers submitted.
While there is no question what they’ve gone through was completely horrendous, not everyone agree that the Menendez brothers should be released.
The mom’s sister, Joan VanderMolen, testimony was permitted by Judge Michael Jesic, the judge in charge. There’s no denying thaat it was a moving experience and no child should endure the sufferings of Eric and Lyle.
In addition, it has come out that some people close to the family knew about the abuse as it was ongoing. However, their uncle, Milton Anderson, is a person who doesn’t hope that the brothers are let out on early release.
While the next court date isn’t until January, it offers hope for the brothers that have spent long behind bars. With tons of evidence for the LA DA to go through, Judge Jesic wanted the DA to have the time necessary to be able to go through everything.
Voluminous exhibits and two lengthy trials require time to properly evaluate, while the DA needs to talk with various parties to see how they’re wishing to proceed. It’s a process that involves prosecutors, law enforcement, defense counsel, and family members all conming together. Without proper review, reaching a fair decision is impossible.
The habeas corpus petition brings with it new accusations against the father from none other than a former member of Menudo, and the accusations resemble what the Menendez brothers went through.
Erik Menendez telling his cousin about the abuse 8 months prior to the murder could also play a role. Unfortunately, the letter was only discovered much later than the trial.
With a push for altered sentencing, it’s possible that the Menendez brothers get released in January. The brothers, currently jailed for life, have a glimpse of hope, and could face immediate release if the altered sentencing is enacted.
In addition, California’s governor has been involved in the case, although he has chosen to lean on the district attorney’s judgment for further action.
