When buying a tv, there are many variables to consider. The resolution, buffering rates, frames per second, color saturation, and visual settings are just some of these variables. There are also purely physical aspects that are just as important. They include:
- weight
- frame width
- shape
- and finally, dimensions.
TV’s come in many different size variations, especially since the rise of the flat-screen market. These types of TVs started dominating the television market. Producers have been looking to make bigger, slimmer, and wider TVs for the user’s comfort. For every brand and model, there are now usually multiple size choices. It means that picking the right one may sometimes be too much for an ordinary person.

Choosing the right measurements of your TV before you buy it is considered one of the more important tasks you have to do. Not only does it determine the price, but it also sets an expectation of how much space the TV will take up in your house. As a result, you’ll be able to properly place it once it’s bought or rearrange your furniture accordingly. Buying a TV that’s too big can make you unable to fit it in preferred locations or even anywhere. On the other hand, buying a TV that’s too small isn’t as drastic in results. In the worst case, you won’t be satisfied with the screen size. The TV might not match the layout of your room.
What are the dimensions of a 55 & 65-inch tv?
A 55-inch and 65-inch TV can be considered the middle ground of television sizes. They’re big enough to provide a comfortable view, suitable for homemade cinema setups. The screen is enough to be used by multiple people at once, making for a great size for families. At the same time, they’re not as awkward to fit and place as the larger options. They’re much easier to move around, clean, and manage in any other way. Placing these size versions will be easy enough so a person can do it by themselves.
Contrary to what you might think, neither 55 nor 65-inch tv sets are not in the dimensions they’re labeled. The 55 and 65 don’t mean width or height- but more on that later. For now, here are the dimensions of 55 & 65-inch TVs:
- 55 inch-TV: 47.9’’ (121.7cm) width by 27’’ (68.6cm) height. It amounts to the total area of 1293in2 being taken up by this version.
- 65 inch-Tv: 56.7’’ (144cm) width by 31.9’’ (81cm) height. This amount to the total area of 1809in2 being taken up by this version.
As you can see, neither the width nor the height is indicated by the number used to label the TV. The width is generally slightly lower than that, while the height is usually considerably smaller. The total area in square feet is also important, as it determines the final amount of space you’ll have to reserve for the TV.

How are they measured?
Using the two examples we’ve just provided, it’s easy to notice that the number used to label the size doesn’t exactly mean its width or height. Instead, it’s used to indicate the diagonal length. It might be (and very often is) greatly confusing, especially for people buying a flat-screen TV for the first time. On most of the available TV models nowadays, this is specified either visually by arrows stretching across the TV diagonally or in the technical documentation.
With all of that in mind, how do you measure a TV’s width and height? Well, there are three main ways available for you. The first one, which is also the preferred one, would be simply to look in the technical documentation of the TV you bought. Even if the dimensions are not mentioned right away, they will 100% be included in the manual in inches and centimeters. One main problem with this method is that many users interested in measuring their items have already gotten rid of the manual or don’t know where it is. Which is completely normal, considering we all throw away the instructions once the thing we bought is working properly.
If you lack a manual and can’t look up the dimensions, you can do it a different way. Try measuring the dimensions with a measuring tape. This particular option is problematic for two reasons. First of all, TVs in shops come in packages. As a result, it’s impossible to physically measure only the width and height without pulling it out of the box- which you can’t do. Secondly, it’s problematic because you must include the frame, different shapes, etc., before calculating your final measurements.
Then, there’s the third option. It is to try and calculate the dimensions based on the diagonal length alone. It can be done if you’re familiar with maths and can figure out a formula. Even then, you’re going to need at least one measurement to be able to figure the other one out.
To properly measure it, you need to know that modern ones are made in aspect ratios of 16:9 of width to height. Additionally, frames come in sizes of 0.3 inches to 1 inch. With this info, you should be able to mathematically determine the dimensions of your TV. It’s even without documentation.
What should you expect from them?
Television sets that come in the size of 55 inches are big enough to provide some luxury for a decently low price. Even though there are much bigger models than this one, it’s still enough to include most of the popular TV features. Some of them are:
- Multiple HDMI ports- most 55-inch TVs not only have an HDMI port but feature a couple of them. It not only gives you more freedom in choosing which port to use. It also gives the option to take up multiple ports at once to allow for cooperative usage. If any of the few ports are malfunctioning, you’ll be able to use the other ones. It increases the overall durability and the fact that it’s failproof.
- USB ports- HDMI is not the only outside format supported. The USB format is probably the most used format today and is supported by most models. It allows the user to plug many various devices, from speakers to laptops and even voice assistants such as Alexa.
- Wireless connections- on top of all the wired options the TVs give us, there are still wireless connections via Bluetooth. It gives full freedom in connecting many various devices of all kinds, such as your mobile phone.
Chart by size
Inches | Width | Height |
32 | 27.9’’ | 15.7’’ |
36 | 31.38’’ | 17.65’’ |
40 | 34.86’’ | 19.6’’ |
42 | 36.61’’ | 21.1’’ |
48 | 42.71’’ | 24.02’’ |
50 | 43.58’’ | 24.5’’ |

85 | 74.1’’ | 41.7’’ |
Considering this many size variations, it can be difficult to choose the correct size for you. Let’s look at all the pros and cons of each size type to make it easier.
Smaller:
These will be a breeze to fit anywhere. They’re compact, light, and easy to install, even on walls. They provide a great option for people with smaller budgets or customers looking to add the finishing touch to an already furnished room. These will be great for your kitchen or garage.
On the other hand, they won’t provide a great watching experience. Details might be too tiny to take apart, and there won’t be many customization options. You can also expect these TVs to have barely any external ports.
Medium-sized:
They are the perfect middle ground. They don’t cost that much more. However, you will be able to see the difference between them and the smaller models regarding comfort. They’ll also provide more ports and luxury options. They don’t lose their compact abilities and are still fairly easy to place.
Unfortunately, they have the “wrongs” of both the size types as the medium. They still don’t provide the same luxury as the bigger options and cost more than smaller ones. They might also provide a bit of a problem when mounting on walls.
Bigger:
They’re certainly the prestige pick. These TVs are made for people with the pickiest tastes and are the most luxurious and prestigious they can be. They’re highly customizable with more options and ports than you can count and a screen big enough to make for a personal cinema.
Unfortunately, they are also the most expensive options. Besides, they’re the hardest to add to your furnishing. They require thorough planning to be placed anywhere.
Viewing distance
Viewing distance is a term that describes the optimal distance from a viewer to the screen. It is important because every human has preferences regarding their FOV (field of view). An incorrect viewing distance might even lead to some health problems.
If your viewing distance is too big, you won’t be able to enjoy the film properly. It will simply be too far. Details will get too small to notice, and colors will lose saturation.
If your viewing distance is too small, you’re risking developing a sight problem due to the screen being too close to you. On top of that, viewing content at the edges of the screen will be uncomfortable. You’ll have to bend your head to see them.
There are a few ways to determine the optimal viewing distance. The first one, resolution, used the TV’s fixed image resolution. The better the resolution, the further away you’ll be able to sit and still see the details. Worse resolutions mean less-visible details, especially from a larger distance.
The second way is to consider the range relative to the width. In general, your viewing distance should increase by 1 foot for every 10 inches of your screen’s size. Therefore:
- 70-inch – 7 feet
- 50-inch – 5 feet
- 45-inch – 4.5 feet
