The prairie style is a type of Craftsman house characterized by being low and flat. They are often single-story homes. They have very distinct horizontal lines, and some are very modern in their look. The flat, distinctive lines complement the landscape where they are built.

These homes have low-pitched roofs and clustered roofs. With a distinct but secluded entrance, they’re majestic designs. We have many different prairie-style options with their open floor layout.

Unlike the Tuscan ones, their style did not originate in Europe but was an architectural creation in the Midwest. It was very likely due to their lack of prairie landscape in Europe. Frank Lloyd is credited for being the architect who gave prairie-style houses the name they have today.

They will also use earthy materials that go well with the prairie landscape. Wide porches and distinctive features are part of the traditional prairie look. Enjoy their elaborate masonry.

Rustic

You may not be the biggest fan of modern or mid-century homes. Duplexes with garages conveniently placed in the middle are also not your style. You want something different. You want something a little raw.

Historical Houses

What characterizes older-looking, historic homes? They have a certain charm and nostalgia not offered by more modern ones. It’s an architectural class of its own. You’ll find architects that solely focus on creating the designs for such houses. You won’t get the sharp edges of some newer homes. Some of them even have wrap-around porches as well.

Other styles may go out of fashion as the winds turn, but this one won’t. Historic buildings have stood the test of time and will provide a home for your family for years. Materials are usually chosen that complement the desired feel, creating timeless designs.

They do not just come in one style. They can have various features resembling classic Ranch-style options or open floor plans. Some historic homes are made out of logs built on a mountain.

Victorian

Victorian designs may not be quite as popular as they used to be. They started popping up in the 1820s, going into the early 1900s. It is still one of the styles we get asked about a lot. We have dedicated this section to Victorian wonders for that reason, giving them the attention they deserve. These historically-inspired designs tower steep roofs and bays. They also have eyebrow windows. They have so many features you won’t find in modern designs.

The style is predominately two-story. Therefore, it may not be suited if you’re trying to move in with your aging Mother-in-law.

Georgian Colonial-Styles

The Georgian colonial-style houses featured are one of the most popular revival subtypes in colonial architecture. They can be found in many places throughout the country. They’re especially popular in the New England area. Cape Cod and traditional colonial architecture are still popular there as well.

The newer Georgian-inspired designs are often less detailed facades than the earlier versions. While it takes away from their appeal, it’s done to make them more affordable. It has also helped make them more widely available. Usual homes would have 5 windows across the facade of the second floor. In comparison, the lower floor would have just 4 windows. A door is placed underneath the main window at the top.

The style may have been revived around the 1900s. The Colonial Revival houses were already significantly more modest by the 1920s. This meant fewer details to make them more affordable.

The traditional Georgian homes were more true in creating symmetry and proportion while providing balance. The later models would be less stringent in pursuing those ideals. Many of them will additionally have two chimneys, one on each side of the house. They are often either white or red. Made of brick, while having a stately appeal to them, they’re a force to be reckoned with.

These are majestic creations that are sure to stand the test of time. Some people love being unusual in the architecture they put on the side of a mountain!

Southern Plantation-Styles

Plantations may have a bad reputation because of their associations. It is undeniable the architecture of Southern plantation-style homes commands a level of respect. They have beautiful symmetrical appearances with massive white pillars.

Wrap-around porches may look impressive. However, they do not have much going for them compared to the plantation-styled homes. These are not your triplex buildings built to be rented out for as much rental income as possible. No, these are mansions in themselves. They are made to impress.

They were originally made possible by the rise in wealth in the South. They now look majestic in how they present themselves.

Not only do they have impressive porches. They also have balconies where you can sit and enjoy the morning view. Beautiful French doors and arched windows are common features to find in these creations.

Fine amenities and gorgeous design are combined in a way only a few can create them. They have a certain historical and old appeal that you won’t get from a Mid-century modern home.

1.5-story

Even if you are building a wooden building, you must consider many factors. One factor to consider is the number of floors that you want.

You can go in either direction you want. We have found our users seem to be interested in the 1.5-story design. It makes it very easy for you to include multi-purpose rooms. With this option, you can easily get high ceilings in the living room. You can do so without having them in the room you will be sleeping in.

It’s a type of design that provides a lot of openness. Your standard single-story or 2-story design won’t have the same high ceilings!

Small or big?

You may like the beauty of bigger, more luxurious places. They may not always be the best in terms of what you are trying to achieve.

If you are building as your retreat, you may be looking for a smaller house instead. Smaller homes have a lot of benefits. For one, they’re significantly cheaper to build.

Still, you will also have much less maintenance to worry about. This can be especially nice if you aren’t planning on living in it full-time.

More modern or more classic?

You may be building something out of wood. You’re not necessarily forced to have to give it a more traditional look. You may just like the modern look better for a home.

The number of bedrooms and bathrooms

How many bedrooms you will need will depend on what you are trying to use the space for. Suppose you use it as the retreat you go to a couple of times per year.

You may not be too concerned with whether you choose to have 3 or 4 bedrooms. A decision like that can be what ends up bothering you. You don’t want to stay there every day if you don’t like the house. The same goes when you have to choose the number of bathrooms.

If you live in a house full time, you may prefer your bathroom and the master bedroom. If you go to the mountains to get away with your spouse, it may not matter. Having a private bathroom isn’t a big priority. After all, you will be the only ones using it anyway.

There is a time and a place where you might be looking to build a duplex or a triplex. The chances are that is not currently the case. We have tried pairing you with the options we believe are most relevant for you.
